SCHOOL SUPPORTED SELF STUDY OF LITERATURE – STANDARD LEVEL ONLY Lead teacher Mrs Shubha Koshy email: [email protected] Typical Course Outline In addition to pursuing West Island School’s taught English Literature / Lang Lit course in group , students can take a Self-Study Literature course in their first language that is NOT English.
This course will offer students the opportunity to study texts written in their first language and they will be assessed in written and spoken assignments through their mother tongue.
Students will be responsible for finding a tutor (not supervisor), who is an expert in this language, to assist them in their Self Study course. However the school and ESF Centre Language Advisors, do have contacts for external tutors / long-distance tutors for some of the more widely studied languages. Regardless of their language background, all students can come together to be supported by the SSST Co-ordinator at WIS.
Students need to be responsible, organised and able to work on their own to deadlines set and negotiated with their supervisor, the school SSST Coordinator and the IB Coordinator.
Students do this course in place of a Group 2 language. This will allow them to be awarded a Bilingual IB Diploma. In addition, as the course involves self-motivated and independent study, students need to be responsible, organised and able to work on their own to deadlines. These deadlines are set and negotiated with their Tutor, the school SSST Coordinator and the IB Coordinator. How will I be assessed?
The Language A : literature SSST course is organised into three areas of exploration and seven central concepts and focuses on the study of literary works. Together, the three areas of exploration of the course add up to a comprehensive exploration of literature from a variety of cultures, literary forms and periods. Students learn to appreciate the artistry of literature and develop the ability to reflect critically on their reading, presenting literary analysis powerfully through both oral and written communication.
