Welcome to West Island School (WIS) and to the Post 16 Curriculum guide for parents and students.

Students who study at West Island School have exceptional opportunities due to the excellent reputation we have secured over many years at leading universities around the world.

Our students achievements rank us as in the top 10%-11% of IB schools worldwide every year. Universities tell us that our students develop unique talents as a result of being well rounded individuals who can think critically, care for themselves and others as well as offering leadership skills that stand out. We don’t take for granted the relationships we have developed over many years with these universities who know and understand exactly what a student from West Island can bring to them. This is why we support, nurture and challenge each one of our students to be their best and forge the way for others to follow in their footsteps.

In the coming pages you will see that there are different routes to enter university worldwide and the choice of pathways depends on each learner’s strengths, how they can maximise their assessment and what their future aims are. By offering a range of Btec qualifications, we are accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organisation to offer an exciting new programme called the IB Careers Related Diploma. This means young people can choose to specialise earlier in their chosen vocation if they know specifically what they wish to do (eg Arts, Sports, Business or Engineering careers). Btec qualifications are equivalent to A levels and do not require end of year examinations. Instead, they are assessed continually throughout the programme. The result of students who take these qualifications are equally outstanding. The vast majority achieve A and A* grades. They enable student to attend equally prestigious universities.
