West Island School
Post 16 Options

Welcome to West Island School (WIS) and to the Post 16 Curriculum guide for parents and students.

West Island School has been established in the best traditions of the English Schools Foundation (ESF) to provide excellence in education of students from eleven to eighteen years of age who want an English medium education. We have an outstanding record of academic attainment and we welcome students to join us on the next stage of their learning journey, leading to prestigious destinations all over the world.

West Island School’s distinction lies in the pursuit of high academic attainment through support, by embracing all approaches to learning and through motivation. The quality of the relationship between students and teachers is outstanding as is the quality of teaching and learning. We believe in partnership between students, parents, teachers and support staff and view our cultural diversity (we have over 40 nationalities represented) as a means of enriching school life. Our school has a strong sense of deep links to the local community and engages in global action to aid others as a central mission, as refected in our vaues statement.

Above all else, West Island School is a happy, community-focused school where people are valued and can fulfil their potential both as teachers and learners.  We believe fundamentally that the school has a duty to create students who embody the IB Learner Profile and we strive to develop these attributes in our students during their time here.

The Post 16 phase promotes lifelong learners who explore, participate and contribute throughout society showing tolerance and compassion alongside the confidence to make a difference.

The Aims of the Post 16 Years:
  • To create an effective, caring and supportive learning environment.
  • To provide students with the qualifications and ‘approaches to learning’ necessary to access tertiary education and future careers.
  • To provide challenges and opportunities to succeed for all students in order to create high expectations of behaviour and involvement.
  • To develop a sense of social responsibility and participation in the international community.
  • To foster self-discipline, leadership, respect for others and the ability to work independently.
  • To provide an ethos of continual improvement and lifelong learning.
